This last Saturday, September 23, 2023, we attended the Austin Typewriter Ink. Type-In event at the Public Library at Buda, Texas. We were able to show our typewriters to the public. Watching people enjoy the experience of writing poems, letters, and other creative things on the vintage machines was fun.

At Buda, Texas

There is a certain appeal to seeing people connect to the past and experience something lost from their lives. It is a feeling of reality provided by tactile participation with the manual keyboard that can’t be compared to using a computer and generating pixels on a monitor. Another appeal is the sound of the typewriter as the typing slug hits the paper. It’s a distinct sound that transports you to a time when there were no distractions to writing.

Many Typewriters were available for the public to use

It’s difficult to explain the sensation of using these “old and obsolete” machines. There is a convenience when using a computer. You can edit your writing on the fly and fix typos and mistakes with a simple keystroke. When using a typewriter, you don’t have that luxury. You must be mindful and think more in writing.

I can attest that it was beautiful to see the mature visitors connect with their past. We also had younger audiences discover and use these machines to create content. Visit and support any Type-In event in your area. The experience will connect you with your past and with your present creative self.
